Different energy sources provide us with the power we need to live and work. Geothermal, solar, wind and biomass are among the sources. These sources are not just an important source of electricity, but can also be used for heating and transport. They can also emit greenhouse gases when used to generate electricity. This means that there is a need for greener sources of energy.
The most widely used type of energy is fossil fuels, which consist of coal, oil, and natural gas. They were formed thousands of years ago when prehistoric animals and plants passed away and were buried under layers of sedimentary rocks. After that, under the appropriate conditions, they gradually converted to carbon-rich substances which, when burned, generate energy. These fossil fuels cannot be recycled since they will be exhausted in our lifetimes or in many lifetimes.
Renewable energy sources are replenished continuously. The sun is the primary source of renewable energy, because it is a source of heat and light. We use it to power our homes and businesses and to drive our vehicles. Wind is a different renewable energy source that generates electricity by spinning turbines. Since the first time people realized how to harness wind in the past, we have been using it for millennia. We utilize biological processes to produce alcohol (a clear, alcohol-like substance that can be used to make fuel) from crops and waste.
As a result hydropower is by far the most important renewable energy source in the United States, though wind and biofuels are predicted to be the next to take over. Hydropower is a natural cycle to harness water’s swift flow, which in turn can be used to produce electricity.
